Hurtle Myrtle Ready To Take On 2012 Doncaster Handicap Field

April 20th, 2012

Trainer Matthew Smith is confident of Hurtle Myrtle’s chances in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap tomorrow April 21, 2012.

With Royal Randwick currently rated as a Heavy 8, and rain expected to continue through the night, Hurtle Myrtle will be in her element.

Smith feels that the mare is up to the tough competition in tomorrow’s race.

“It’s a hard race but the timing is right for her,” Smith said.

“She’s more mature now. I’ve kept her against the mares purely because she was a bit immature and she wasn’t ready for open company.

“But first-up last preparation she was second in a sprint race against the boys and it was quite a good run.

“Doncasters are hard to win but I’m happy to be there with no weight (53kg) and she likes wet tracks.”

The five-year-old has won four of her 21 race starts and has earned more than $760,000 in prize money during her career.

Hurtle Myrtle finished fourth in her most recent start in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes and will be third up in the 2012 Doncaster Handicap.

“I experimented last time by not giving her too many runs because she seems to run well fresh,” Smith said.

“Not having a long preparation suits her so I’ve stuck to that plan.”
